Window light first, ring light second
Put your subject beside a window, not in front of it. One side of the face is lit and the other falls off softly, which is what makes a face look like a face.
Add a ring light only to fill what the window leaves dark. Soft side light is kind to faces; a hard light straight overhead rarely is.
